Research & Development
GRI provides an inexpensive alternative to in-house process and product development. We provide high quality R&D services through access to one of the world's most sophisticated fluidized bed research facilities.
Fast and confidential services make us stand out from others
Some of our past projects include:
- Development of a mathematical model of a large CFB boiler for a major European company
- Development of advanced CFB boilers
- Detailed heat transfer and hydrodynamic analysis of a CFB boiler at a trouble-prone plant in Asia
- Combustion behavior of waste fuels for some Canadian companies
- Development of special fluidized bed grate distributors.
An GRI design audit is offered to EPC contractors, plant owners and financial institutions to help protect you against failure or underperformance of fluidized bed boilers.
Although the EPC contractors take total responsibility of a power plant; ensuring that all components of the plant including the fluidized bed boilers meet their performance guarantee offered by the vendors, it has been observed that some year after the acceptance test more than 80% of the boilers either gave less than desired generation or had to be operated at considerably higher furnace temperature giving stiff sorbent penalty and frequent tube failures. In most cases, since these incidents occurred well after the contractual performance tests, the boiler owner could not claim compensation from the supplier. Only in limited cases these resulted in protracted legal procedures with minimal effect on the profitability of the plant.
GRI, being a specialist in CFB and BFB boiler design & operations, offers an alternative to this potential loss of revenue by acting on behalf of the plant owner; thoroughly checking the design of the boiler along every step of its design and construction to ensure that the necessary steps are taken to avoid potential future boiler failure.
Reduce Your Capital Cost
GRI will analyze the cost submitted by your vendor and determine if any superfluous costly items are included or any less expensive but better performing items could be used. GRI will also compare vendor's offer against its own cost data bank for India.
If you are allowed to import, GRI will explore which overseas suppliers can provide you with a better price and by using GRI's extensive network in other countries will verify the technical competence and reliability of their design.
Save Loss of Revenue From Post Handover Downtime and Generation Shortfall
GRI will independently design the boiler offered by your vendor. It will compare the design offered by them and work with your vendor to alter over-design or under-design. GRI will also offer suggestions for improvements in their design to make it suitable for your specific operating conditions.
If necessary, GRI will carry out tests with your fuel in their research unit to verify some design parameters.
Warn you of potential failure and provide corrective solutions if available
By taking into consideration the environmental regulation changes and availability of fuel expected for the next 20 years, GRI will help you make the best choice in boiler technology and save you from the 'least cost' choice your vendor might offer which could be very expensive a few years down the road.
Make The Right Management Decisions
Your executives can be exposed to financial, operational and technological aspects of the present day technological options for captive power plant allowing them to make informed decisions and negotiate best terms from your bidders.
What A Design Audit Can Do For You
Does GRI force boiler vendor to change their design?
No, GRI is simply an informed advisor to the boiler purchaser. If it observes some weakness in the design or manufacturing, GRI brings that to the attention of the supplier. If convinced, the supplier could either accept that or ignore that. In that latter case the vendor takes responsibility of ignoring the technical suggestion.

The boiler division of Greenfield Research Incorporated licensed its Circulating Fluidized Bed boiler technology to Seoul Sharp Heavy Industries in the range of 50-250 tons per hour capacity for coal, petcoke and biomass. Seoul Sharp Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (www.seoulsharp.com) is a leader in the manufacture of air pollution control equipment in South Korea with a dominant presence in wet electrostatic precipitator. CFB boiler makes a strategic fit in their portfolio of environment friendly technology.
GRI is ready to license Bubbling and Circulating Fluidized Bed technology to industries who wish to diversify into the growing market of fluidized bed boiler. For further details contact: Vice President (Administration), Greenfield Research Incorporated at email@example.com
Specification and Evaluation Services
Tender Specification Preparation
Tender specification for circulating or bubbling fluidized bed boilers differs considerably from that from conventional or pulverized coal (PC) fired boiler. Adoption of a PC fired boilers’ tender could lead to cost over-specification or serious under-specification of critical items. A carefully prepared specification customized for fluidized bed boiler can ensure the owner trouble free operation and best price. Such a tender specification clearly asks for information from vendors that are critical for fluidized bed boilers but are not relevant for other types and hence not asked for. This could avoid potential disputes with the vendor in future. Fluidized bed boilers being relatively new technology, the owner may not be fully aware of it and end up in getting something less than their expectation. Also fluidized bed boilers being different from PC fired boilers, it is not recommended to use its specification to purchase fluidized bed boilers.
GRI with its more than 30 years of exposures to FBC boilers can help project developers prepare the tender specification specific to their requirements and for fluidized bed boiler technology. In this way it will address all the terms that is required in the specification.
Bid evaluation Assistance
GRI can help project developers evaluate multiple bids for CFB or BFB boilers using its sophisticated method for ranking of bids. It does it by separating critical from less critical items and by checking the experience base of vendors in those items. GRI’s evaluation is based on its more 30 years of experience in this field.
Troubleshooting & Perfomance Analysis
The FBC Boiler Division of Greenfield Research Incorporated has the unique capability of assisting Fluidized Bed Boiler operators to improve the present performance of their boilers and to investigate into the causes of boiler problems. Our personnel have more than 20 years of experience in designing and building both Bubbling and Circulating Fluidized Bed boilers, as well as 25 years of experience of research into causes of failure of components of fluidized bed boilers. We have specialized into studying erosion in Circulating Fluidized Bed boilers.
Some of our past projects include:
- Agglomeration in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed boiler while operating well above design velocity.
- Low furnace heat absorption leading to very high back-end temprature and corrosion in a Circulating Fluidized Bed boiler.
- Loss in generation in a Circulating Fluidized Bed boiler.
- Frequent erosion of bed nozzles in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed boiler.
